Mukhtar Ablyazov – The Kazakh Magician That Vanished Billions
Mukhtar Ablyazov was once a close friend and confidante of Nursultan Nazarbayev, Kazakhstan's president. His more than friendly ties with the president led him to become the energy minister of Kazakhstan, a country with rich reserves of oil and gas.
Things were looking up for him and he became a tycoon who owned a sugar company and TV stations and had stakes in an airline. He also ran a grain processor and was the country's largest producer of salt. Ablyazov, along with his partners, bought a bank in 1998, that later became BTA.
